Izmit School Update
ARSLANBEY SCHOOL UPDATE November 10, 2006
I was in Turkey last week. Mr. Erturk Dincel and I paid a visit to the Izmit ATA SC Arslanbey School and talked to the PTA members and vice principal. The school has a 7th grade now and will open up an 8th grade next year. There are now more than 200 students. It was a school day for only the 6-7 graders, so we got to meet only the elder students.
We have been sponsoring 8 needy students at the school. They each get 30 YTL per month for their school and other needs. On the ATASC website you will find “Thank You” letters from three of them. They tell how this money helps out with their basic needs. But also it tells how impressed they is that there is somebody far away who cares for them. It is very heartwarming. Each child has a sad story and our help goes a little way to alleviate their problems.
Arslanbey School received a very generous gift from LATAA in excess of $7000. This money was earmarked for Computers Science Lab Ataturk Corner Sponsoring more needy children (five additional) General operating funds for the school Other needs we identify that would help education
THANK YOU LATAA BOARD FOR BEING SO GENEROUS IN HELPING THE EDUCATION THE TURKISH CHILDREN.
Well, Erturk Bey did a great job of acquiring computers for the school. He bargained down to rock bottom prices and got Arcelik to throw in one too. School staff had obtained computer tables beforehand. So we were able to build a computer lab with 11 computers that will give the children hands on experience. He just had the computers delivered to school. So now the poor children - who do not have a computer at home- will also be able to learn to use them. THANK YOU ERTURK BEY FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS.
He is working the other issues with the school staff and PTA members. In the meantime a new class enrolled and there are some needy kids that are new to school. PTA already identified some and will send us their resumes. We will hopefully sponsor them too. Here are the letters from the students. Click on them to open a larger copy.
