Dear ATASC members:
This is the last report of 2006 from Izmit ATASC Arslanbey School to summarize what we together accomplished in 2006
- Sponsored 8 needy students financially. We will increase that number to 12 for next year. You can see their “thank you” letters in the previous school updates. They are very amazed and appreciative that someone so far away cares for their education and well being.
- We built a computer lab with 11 brand new computers. Now every student has a chance to have hands on computer education.
- We are in the process of building the science laboratory. We helped build the infrastructure and ordered and paid for the science equipment.
- We partitioned two new areas for a principals’ office and a teachers’ room. As we had mentioned before, the school was running out of classroom space. After these modifications, 2 classrooms are freed for the incoming 8th grade next year.
- Mr. Kaya Tuncer sent 6 children to his Izmir Space Camp. You can see their pictures and “thank you” notes in previous messages.
Thank you ATASC, LATAA (who provided major funding for the school), the friends who sponsored the eight needy children, Mr. Kaya Tuncer who provided six scholarships to Space Camp and Mr. Erturk Dincel who managed the improvement projects in Turkey. More importantly the school thanks you. Here is a letter from the vice principal.

Arslanbey ATA-SC İlköğretim Okulu’nda eğitim ve öğretimde artık öğrenciler bilgisayarlı eğitim yapabiliyorlar. İnternete bağlanıp ödevleri için kaynak araştırıyorlar. Kullanmasını bilmeyenler yavaş yavaş bilgisayarı öğreniyor.
Kısa süre sonra fen laboratuarı da onların hizmetine girecek.
Ertürk Bey’in, Sizin ve tanışma fırsatı bulduğum ve bulamadığım dostlarınız sayesinde…Öğrencilerimiz daha gayretli artık.
Yeni okul aile birliğimiz çok gayretli ve fedakarane bir şekilde başarılara imza atmaya devam ediyor. İnşallah tüm sıkıntıların üstesinden gelinecektir.
Tüm personelim ve öğrencilerim adına Amerikadaki dostlarınıza ve size teşekkür eder işlerinizde başarılar dilerim.

He was able to e-mail from school using their new computers and internet connection. It will be great if we can now connect Turkish American middle school students with the students in Arslanbey School. If there are any volunteers for pen pals, please send me an e-mail. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments.
We all should be very proud to have built this school after the earthquake and for our help in 2006. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
