ATASC Arslanbey School Update---by Vega Sankur

Dear ATASC members:

ATASC Arslanbey School opened for 2007-2008 year.  Here are some of the good news from school.

Again this summer, six accomplished students from higher grades attended Izmir Space Camp due to the generosity of Kaya and Mary Tuncer, and hard work of Erturk Dincel. The children benefited greatly from the program.
Here is a letter from their teacher Ms. Kubra Yuce on how successful the Space Camp has been. You should also hear from students shortly now that the school has opened. They visited the governor of Kocaeli to talk about Space Camp experiences. Here is the article in the Kocaeli Newspaper:

This school year, we are up to sponsoring 14 children due to the generosity of Turkish American friends in California. These children are quite needy (as identified by the PTA and school admin.) and the $240/year support makes a financial impact in their lives - as well as knowing that somebody cares about their education.

Here is a picture of Vega Sankur with Hatice Donmez, one of our sponsored students. She wants to be a doctor, like the one that now takes care of her.

On the not so good news side, the school building is getting to be too small for their needs. There needs to be a bigger school building in the next couple of years. Currently, schools cost close to a million dollars in Turkey. We realize that this is outside the current financial boundaries/power of ATASC. We are seeking ideas from our community on how to go about looking for other funding resources; here or in Turkey.
